A Dynamic Geo-scientific Ontology Tool
This paper briefly reviews recent development of the geo-scientific ontology for the geoscience data integration, examines the dynamic characteristics of the geo-scientific knowledge and discusses in detail epistemic considerations of the ontology. It has been recognized that geoscience has its own way to define and classify concepts and that geo-scientific knowledge is situational and interpretive. Therefore, the authors of this paper propose a tool that allows its users to edit the geo-scientific ontology on an ongoing and interactive basis. The ontology basically consists of hierarchical, localization, and interpretation models. It has been demonstrated that these models can be used not only for the geoscience data integration, but also for other geological application, e.g.drilling down in the data sets or category data in the databases.
