Digital Mountains: Concept, Architecture and Contents

Economy has been growing at a rapid pace for several decades in China. That growth has made us aware of one reality: the price the nation is paying in accelerated degradation of the environment is alarming. Natural environment in mountain regions is vulnerable to the disturbance of human activities. Therefore, it is a key issue to coordinate economic development and environment protection in mountain regions. On the other hand, a lot of work is ongoing on mountain sciences, especially based on the utilization of RS and GIS. Digital Earth (DE), expatiated by A L Gore in 1998, aims at taking advantage of massive geospatial information and turning raw data into understandable information. These are the background of Digital Mountains (DM). In this paper the DM is brought forward to integrating the contribution in the field of mountain development and environment protection by systematic and quantitative methodology. The concept of the DM is that, the spatial and temporal data related to mountain regions are stored and managed in computers; moreover, manipulating, analyzing, modeling, simulating and sharing of the mountain information are implemented by utilizing technologies of RS, GIS, GPS, Geo-informatic Tupu, computer, virtual reality (VR), 3D simulation, massive storage, mutual operation and network communication. The DM aims at advancing mountain sciences and sustainable mountain development, such as resources exploitation, environment protection, natural hazards mitigation, social and economic sustainable development, mountain ecological security and global environment changes. The DM, which is originated from the DE, is the practice and demonstration of the DE. The fundamental work of the DM is the design of scientific architecture. Furthermore, construction and development of massive databases on mountains are important steps these days.
