Strengthening Statistical Activities by Using Digital Cartography and Visualization in the Context of Nepalese Statistical System: Opportunity and Challenges
Development Planning is supported by statistics in its various levels of formulation, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and distribution of benefits. Scientific tools and methods able to make reforms in statistical activities in connection to recent developments in Information Technology and Geographic Information Systems has shake many statistical organizations and compelled to orient towards use of geo-database and modern dissemination techniques. Difficulties imposed with diverse geographic terrain, unplanned urbanization and climatic variations could not overcome effectively with analog base maps caused compulsion of digital cartography. Statisticians are lured with many more facilities provided with it in various stages of statistical operations. Scientific methods of visualization empowered with Geographic Information System (GIS) and Geographic Information Techniques (GIT) came as unprecedented solution for quality management, user satisfaction, effective dissemination and user friendly form of statistical products. This paper intends to give an overview on prevailing cartography in census and survey works and existing data dissemination methods in Nepal. It also throw light on efforts made in past how GIS is introduced in Nepalese Statistical System and briefly explain present situation with potentials, opportunities and challenges for using digital cartography and GIS based dissemination through visualization.
