Natural organic matter and its role in the environment
Natural organic matter (NOM) is one of the important components in natural environments.Studies have shown that NOM plays a significant role in many physical and biogeochemical processes and had important eco-environmental effects in aquatic ecosystems. Unfortunately, only approximately 25% of NOM has been characterized so far, which has greatly limited our understanding of water quality and many biogeochemical processes in general. This study reported the chemical characterization and distribution of NOM in lakes and rivers from the Southwestern China Plateau using fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence quenching titration, molecular weight distribution, DON/DON analyses, and also demonstrated the binding behavior between NOM and contaminants, e.g., Hg(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), PAHs and pharmaceuticals. The results would be helpful in the understanding of biogeochemical cycling of NOM and contaminants, health risk assessment and significant roles in natural ecosystems.
