Yttria-stabilized zirconia-based ceramic sensors for hydrothermal applications

Stabilized-doped Zirconium Oxide ceramics for high temperature O2 sensing in harsh environments have become common in industrial, environmental and automotive applications. These ceramics can be used effectively in many harsh environments to sense the pH of solutions above 83℃ and at pressures as high as 101.3 kPa. One particular commercially-available ceramic shows promise during our experiments at 91 ℃over the pH range from 1.6-9.6. Experiments have surpassed more than 8,000-hours of continuous exposure in a laboratory flow-through test at 101.3 kPa and demonstrate near-Nernstian behavior. The sensor shows impressive reaction times, in the order of minutes, to changes in the pH of the test solution. The sensor is constructed with the reference voltage provided by Hg-HgO paste and has a response of approximately 66 mV per pH unit at 91 ℃, which allows the sensor to operate in a very wide range of solutions.
