Known and predicted geothermal resources in Guangzhou and its adjacent Southern areas

There are abundant geothermal resources in Guangdong Province, which provide good opportunities for sustainable development by the geothermal industry. However, the geothermal resources are unevenly distributed; they are rare in highly developed Guangzhou and its adjacent southern area (the Pearl River Delta).Such a situation limits development of the geothermal industry in these areas, and exploration for geothermal resources is highly desired. Known hydrothermal waters in Guangdong Province are generally related to regional large deep faults and magmatic intrusions. Based on these relations, we propose that although a thick cover of sedimentary rocks is present in the central part of the Pearl River Delta, which prevents transfer of deeply derived heat, several large, deep faults in the region may provide conduits for heat transfer. In addition, magmatic intrusions are voluminous in the region. These provide favorable conditions for formation of geothermal resources. Considering such geological indications and known borehole temperatures, four potential areas of hidden geothermal anomalies are predicted and recommended for further exploration; two are related to the Guanshan (Shougouchen)Fault and the Guancong Fault, respectively; and the other two are located in the Nansa and Wanqingsa areas.
