Speciation and solubility of Co(Ⅱ) in the system Co-O-H-Cl-S at saturated water vapor pressure up to 300 ℃

Available thermodynamic data for aqueous complexes of Co(Ⅱ) with hydroxide, chloride and bisulfide have been critically evaluated and extrapolated to 300 ℃ at saturated water vapor pressure. Speciation of Co(Ⅱ) in hydrothermal solutions and the solubility of Co(Ⅱ)-oxide and-sulfide minerals have been calculated.Although bisulfide complexes have rather wide predominance fields at geologically reasonable values of pH,∑Cl and ∑S, especially at lower temperatures, the solubility of Co(Ⅱ) minerals is very low where bisulfide complexes predominate. Significant solubility of Co(Ⅱ) is therefore only likely under conditions where chloride complexes predominate, specifically at low pH (less than ~4) or high oxygen fugacity (hematite-stable) or both.
