A long term numerical simulation of groundwater nitrate contamination in Shijiazhuang City, China

To evaluate effects of different management scenarios on groundwater nitrate concentrations in Shijiazhuang City, two-dimensional unconfined flow and nitrate transport models for long-term of 42 years were developed using Visual Modflow. A large number of groundwater monitoring reports and research reports collected provided data for developing the models. Detailed water table and nitrate concentration monitoring data and historical water table contours were used for calibrating the models. The models calibrated were used for predicting groundwater nitrate concentrations within next 30 years under three management scenarios. The models can serve as an effective tool of groundwater management in Shijiazhuang City.
