Numerical simulation of the formation of groundwater chemical components in the Mayukou area, Datong, China

The amounts of dissolved primary minerals, precipitated secondary minerals and the aqueous chemical components were determined in groundwater in the Mayukou area, Datong, China by numerical simulation and by using a mathematical model involving the chemical equilibrium for a multiphase, multimineral, multi-component system, and the mass transfer theory developed by Helgeson. The calculated values of chemical components of the groundwater and the determined water chemical type were in concordance with real measured results. This model further simulated and validated the mechanism of the zoning of water chemical types, element transfer, and differentiation, as well as the process controlling the mineral sequence.
