Groundwater chemistry within a sub seafloor coal mine in Hokkaido, Kushiro, Japan

Models of groundwater transport in the coastal area are needed for prediction of groundwater use within Japan. The Kushiro coal mine was driven under the Pacific Ocean coast southeast of Hokkaido. We collected groundwater from the mine to investigate groundwater flow. Three groundwater categories exist within the mine. Freshwater from inshore area; brackish water with chloride 15,000-19,300 ppm at the adit coal mining level; brackish base water from deep underground at 1000-1500 m below ground level with chloride 13,000-15,000 ppm. The boundary of freshwater and brackish water occurs 4.5 km oceanwards from the shore.δD of base water is about -20‰. δD of freshwater is -60‰ to-80‰, and δD for brackish water at tunnel level is greater than that for base water. The brackish water has an effect on ventilation of base water. Inland the deep base water is clearly distributed over a huge area southeast of Hokkaido.
