Porosity reduction at material interface as a result of water-rock interactions in the context of deep geological waste disposal
Due to the time scale of potential clogging of pores in deep geological waste repository systems(thousands of years), a modeling approach is required to predict this effect quantitatively. Modeling has to be combined with experiments focusing on the phenomenology to be implemented in the models. This includes changes in the reactive transport parameters due to the decrease of porosity, but also changes in flow patterns in some cases. Existing results and design of a new 2D-clogging experiment is presented. The role of porosity reduction is discussed in terms of robustness as a safety function in radioactive waste repositories.
