HIP: Integrated strategy to stimulate application of in-situ remediation techniques in the Netherlands

In-situ soil and groundwater remediation technologies are available for dealing with a wide range of contaminant and site conditions (contaminant type, geohydrology, land use). Despite the advantages of lower cost and minimal disturbance of site operation or development, in-situ remediation techniques are not yet broadly applied. TNO Built Environment and Geosciences and ten remediation contractors have, through the support of the Netherlands Centre for Soil Quality Management and Knowledge Transfer (SKB), joined in an extensive demonstration program (HIP) with the objective to stimulate the use of in-situ soil and groundwater remediation techniques. Toward this goal, 24 demonstration pilots for a range of contaminant and site conditions are performed. Various combinations of contaminant and site conditions are divided into 4 archetypes that cover over 80% of the total number of contaminated sites in the Netherlands. As a result this program should build trust amongst site owners and legislators and answer to the market demand for cheaper remediation operations both nationally and internationally.
