Secondary mineralogy at Furtei, Sardinia, Italy: Controls on toxic elements mobility

The occurrence of secondary minerals in the high sulfidation epithermal gold deposit at Furtei,Sardinia, was studied in detail as a contribution to understand the potential for toxic element (Cu, As) release from open cuts and waste piles. Most of these minerals are represented by sulfates, with subordinate halides. Copper is contained in easily soluble minerals such as cuprian melanterite and eriochalcite, that represent ephemeral traps. Arsenic was recognized in scorodite, and as an adsorbed phase onto Fe oxyhydroxides -sulfates, and is expected to be less mobile than Cu.
