Hot-springs associated with calcareous deposits in Japan, and their implications for future CO2 underground geological storage

Bicarbonate-type hot springs with calcareous deposits at five areas in Japan were investigated in order to understand precipitation conditions of carbonate minerals as a natural analog study for CO2 underground storage. The hot-spring waters have Cl and HCO3 concentrations less than 4500 and 2000 mg/l, respectively, and the precipitates are composed predominantly of Fe-oxyhydroxide near the discharge vents, and calcite downstream. Their calculated saturation indices (over 0.9) implied that the calcite started to precipitate under supersaturated conditions. Determination of such saturation indices for various carbonate minerals might be helpful for a future precise prediction of interaction between injected CO2-rich waters and deep aquifer minerals through numerical simulation.
