Use of natural and archaeological analogs to validate long-term behaviour of HLW glass in geological disposal conditions

Some basaltic and Roman glasses have been studied in order to validate the predictive models developed for assessing the long-term behaviour of nuclear glass. Leaching behaviour ofbasaltic glass allows to validate the key mechanisms and the order of magnitude of glass packages lifetime in a stable clayey formation(French reference concept for a geological disposal of high level waste). The study of Roman glass blocks altered during 1800 years in a marine environment give new insight on the basic mechanisms involved in confined media(fractures and small cracks). Results show the importance of the coupling between transport of reactive species and chemical reactions. This study, still in progress, would allow to validate the reasoning by analogy.
