Numerical modeling and optimization study on injection of waste water into Shiwu reservoir

The Shiwu reservoir in the Songliao Basin, North China has identified as significantly underpressured, as indicated by the drill-stem test (DST) data. The difference between the normal and the subnormal pressure is 8 to 15 MPa. The effective seal with very low permeability (the vertical permeability of 10-21 m2 and the lateral permeability of less than 10-19 m2) surrounding the underpressured reservoir makes it possible for the liquid waste to be contained safely and permanently. In this paper, attempts are made to analyze the potential of using the Shiwu underpressured reservoir for safely disposal of liquid wastes. An optimization model is developed to estimate the amount of liquid wastes which may be disposed in the Shiwu Reservoir.
