Chemical evolution of groundwater along flow paths in fractured granite, Hungary

The research is associated with the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal survey at Uveghuta. The study was carried out to evaluate the primary hydrogeochemical composition of groundwater which will help in the understanding of the flow system, and also to provide constraints for flow and transport model calibration. The shallow groundwater can be found partly m Pleistocene loess but mainly in the weathered granite, whereas the deep flow system occurs in fractured fresh granite. Based on hydrogeochemical evaluation, two zones-a southern and a northern- can be distinguished in the studied area. In the northern research area the groundwater flow is faster, consequently similar groundwater composition can be found 100-150 meters deeper than in the southern area.
