Preliminary study on Paleozoic and Mesozoic source rocks in the frontier offshore South Makassar Basin, Indonesia

Hydrocarbons (liquid and gas) seeps have been detected both onshore and offshore in the South Makassar Basin. The source rocks of the hydrocarbons has not been established yet. The most likely source rocks in the basin are the Paleogene (Eocene and Oligocene) sediments and, to some extent, the Neogene (Miocene)sediments. During this study, sediment samples collected from some exploration wells were screened for their source richness, type of organic matter content, and maturity. Since this basin is offshore, there are only a few exploration wells and limited rock samples available. The geochemical results indicate that most of the samples have not reached the oil window. In order to establish a maturity study in the deeper area, modeling using BasinModTM 1D and 2D was performed in consideration of geological and geophysical data. Results suggest that the Eocene sediments are mature up to the dry gas window. Eocene sediments are also mature ranging from the peak of oil generation to the wet gas window, whereas the Miocene sediments range from barely mature up to the peak ofoil generation.
