Rare earth elements geochemistry of sedimentary bedrock and groundwater from Lastochka spa (Northern part of Primorye, Russia)

Abundance and distribution of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) was determined for sedimentary bedrocks and related groundwater from Lastochka spa (Primorye, Far East of Russia). The rock studied is sandstone of varying grain size with mineral assemblages dominated by quartz, K-feldspar and albite. Wholerock REE concentrations decrease from the shallowest to the deepest sedimentary bedrock layers. Overall samples of rock are slightly enriched in light REE (LREE) and depleted in heavy REE (HREE) whereas groundwaters are relatively enriched in middle and heavy REE compared to light REE. Weathered rocks show a negative Eu/Eu*and positive Ce/Ce*, although unweathered sediment exhibits an almost flat pattern. The distinct positive Eu/Eu*in groundwaters indicates the nature of their interaction with sediment bedrock.
