Regional characterization of the reaction capacity of shallow aquifer sediments
Quantitative insight in the reaction capacity of aquifer sediments is necessary for e.g. prediction of future groundwater composition. A regional statistical assessment of the reaction capacity was performed for four adjacent regions in The Netherlands that are slightly different in their build-up of the shallow subsurface. The assessment per region was executed at the level of geological formations and at the sublevel of lithology class. Differences in reaction capacities were observed for: (1) different lithological classes within a geological formation in a single region, (2) identical geological formations in different regions and (3) various geological formations in a single region. Based on the differences found, future characterization of reaction capacity should be performed at the sublevel of lithology class, as smallest scale unit with most uniform composition of reactive compounds.
