Leaching experiments of As species from gold-mine tailings

Batch leaching experiments were performed on gold mine tailings from the Jinfeng Mine, Dandong, NE China. As-bearing minerals were characterized by XPS. The results demonstrate that As is present as As2O3. In leaching experiments with deionized water, As in the leaching solution declined with time from 254 μg/L to 160 μg/L during 7 days, but increased after 7 days. Although As(Ⅲ) was stable after two days and 15% oxidized after the 4th day, As(Ⅴ) was the predominate species after 7 days. The leachates have strong buffer capacity because of the carbonate-bicarbonate matrix used to process ores at the mine. There is no obvious change in As concentration from leaching when pH changes from 4 to 8. Total As increases from 59 μg/L to 200 μg/L when pH goes up from 2.0 to 10.0. Alkaline conditions favor leaching of As.
