Hydrogeochemical characteristics of fluoride in groundwater in the east part of the Yuncheng Basin, Northern China

Long-term intake of high-fluoride groundwater by humans causes endemic fluorosis. This study describes the relationship between hydrogeochemical characteristics and fluoride levels of groundwater. Piper diagrams were used to determine groundwater hydrogeochemical facies. Mean of groundwater fluoride concentration was compared for waters belonging to different hydrogeochemical facies. In general, Ca-SO4 groundwater had the lowest concentrations fluoride, followed by Ca-HCO3, Ca-Na-HCO3 and Na-Mg-HCO3 water. The Na-HCO3 water with low TDS commonly had higher fluoride content. With the increase of TDS Na-SO4-Cl, Na-SO4 and Na-SO4-HCO3 water with high fluoride content were observed on the north bank of the salt lake. The formation of this kind of water resulted from the rapid elevation of Na/Ca in groundwater. The fluoride content of Na-Cl-SO4 water with low TDS is lower.
