Mechanism of karstification developed in sulphate and carbonate rocks

In order to understand the mechanisms of karst development in systems containing both sulfate and carbonate minerals, dissolution experiments were carried out in laboratory. The results show that karstification has a close relationship to mineral assemblages and that H2 S was produced and its concentration increased with time because of bacterial sulfate reduction; no H2S was found in sterile systems. The δ34S values of H2S and SO42- in experimental solution at temperatures of 35 and 50℃ ranged from 12.49 to 18.72‰ and 25.83 to 28.69‰, respectively. The results suggest that the geochemical and biogeochemical processes in the complex formation of sulfate and carbonate rocks result in karstification. The chemical compositions and δ34S values can be used as indicators for these geochemical processes.
