Distribution of arsenic and other aqueous constituents in groundwater of Taiyuan basin, China
Some areas of the Taiyuan basin in China are endemic arsenism region. Arsenic concentrations in groundwater of these areas exceed guide concentration, set internationally and nationally at 10 to 50μg L-1.The chemical characteristics of groundwater were analyzed based on 44 groundwater samples collected during May and September of 2003. The relationships between arsenic and a variety of parameters including pH,dissolved HCO3-, Fe, Mn concentrations, and SO42-/Cl- ratio are discussed in this paper. High dissolved arsenic concentrations were always accompanied by high pH, high dissolved HCO3-, and low SO42-/Cl- ratio. The reductive condition of groundwater also contributes to arsenic presence in aquifers.
