Impact of acid rain fall on stability of rocks: An analogous study on sandstone of Upper Kaimur Group, Vindhyan Supergroup
The Vindhyan sandstones was deformed in the laboratory under compression, tension and shear in uniaxial and triaxial conditions on a Universal Testing System as per the norms of the International Society of Rock Mechanics ( 1981). The experiments were carried out on dry samples as well as samples saturated with water having different acidity. Dry samples of sandstones show highest compressive, tensile, shear and cohesive strengths. The decreasing trend in the compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength and cohesive strength of saturated sandstone with the reduction in pH of water may be due to increased corrosion potential of water at lower pH. In contrast to the strengths, the angle of internal friction increases with the reduction in pH value of water.
