The effect of groundwater on karst collapse in Wuhan City, China
Karst collapse is one of the most frequent geologic hazards, and changing groundwater level is always the main inducing factor. For Wuhan City, one of the most famous cities in China, there have been more than 10 karst collapses since 1930. With the development of construction in Wuhan, the potential for karst collapse has increased. Therefore, study of factors controlling karst collapse, especially the most important factor groundwater level, has practical significance. In this study, a geologic model and test model were obtained based on the analysis of the previous karst collapses in Wuhan, and the effect that different groundwater dynamic force conditions have on karst collapse was studied using a physical model. The effect that different groundwater levels have was also studied using a numerical simulation. Through the physical model test and numerical simulation,we found that the exploitation of Quaternary system pore water and especially karst water, as well as the hydraulic slope have an important effect on karst collapse in Wuhan.
