Numerical simulation of water-rock coupling of faults potentially inducing earthquakes in the Three Gorges reservoir
The problems of the induced earthquakes of reservoir of the Three Gorges Engineering have been researched thoroughly for about half a century. On the basis of groundwater dynamics, the corresponding numerical equations of finite element were deduced from the angle of water-rock coupling, and criterion of the induced earthquake and its important parameter (effective coefficient Kn) are put forward on the basis of minimum tensile strain. For the example of Three Gorges Reservoir, the induced earthquakes of reservoir were predicted and forecast with finite element method, and the plot plan of the potentially induced earthquake were obtained under different water levels. These results provide a better fit with the facts.
