Reduction of chromate by granular iron in the presence of dissolved CaCO3

To determine the effects of dissolved calcium carbonate on changes of the iron reactivity towards Cr(Ⅵ) reduction and hydraulic conductivity and to provide mechanistic explanations, column experiments, including measurements of continuous corrosion potential and surface film composition using Raman spectroscopy were conducted. The results show that the presence of calcium carbonate buffers the increase in pH due to iron corrosion and Cr(Ⅵ) reduction, and thus maintains relatively low corrosion potentials and enhances reactivity of the iron towards Cr(Ⅵ) reduction. The build-up of carbonate minerals does not cause a significant decrease in hydraulic conductivity. This implies that iron permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) can be applied for chromate removal and the operation can be effective for substantial periods of time.
