Biodegradation of perchloroethylene by cometabolism under Fe reductive environment

This paper presents research on perchloroethylene cometabolism of groundwater spiked with acetate acid under Fc reductive environment by batch experiments. The activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was inoculated with a mixture of groundwater and soil, which was from a garden. When there was a large enough microorganism population, acclimation experiment was carried out with acetate acid as co metabolism substrate. Then the microorganism was used to degrade PCE. The results show that the microorganism population and activity increased with time and reached a maximum on the 11th day during every acclimation period. Ninety percent PCE was removed and Fe(Ⅱ)s concentration was 68.23 mg/L after 13 days. In the process of PCE degradation, TCE appeared after 1 day and a few μg/L of DCE was produced after 10 days. TCE concentrations decrease was not observed. The carbon balance in this reaction system is between 89.00~100.0%.
