A novel chloride-tolerant bacterial strain (bacillus firmus strain S616) isolated from the activated sludge of the wastewater treatment system of a diosegenin production plant
In an effort to find halophilic bacteria capable of biologically degrading refractory organics in saline diosgenin wastewaters with high COD concentrations, a calcium chloride tolerant bacterial strain(numbered as S616 by the authors) was successfully isolated. Its 16S rDNA sequence is closely related to Bacillus firmus by a 98.0-99.0% similarity. Detailed studies on COD of Diosgenin wastewater removal efficiencies of the strain S616 indicate that COD removal efficiency was up to about 80% when degradation time, pH, temperature, and inoculation were 48 h, 7-8, 30-35℃ and 1 ml, respectively, which offers the theoretical basis for the bacterial strain to be used in treating high chloride wastewaters.
