Influence of concentration, mobile phase on the determination of molecular weight distribution by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)

The Molecular Weight Distribution (MWD) of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) from landfill leachate was investigated by aqueous Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and ultrafiltration. There is no relationship between the membrane cut-offand elution volumes because of the effects of GPC system conditions such as the DOM concentration and mobile phase. Two effects were discussed. Associative interactions between compounds or compounds and gel column and non-size-exclusion effects, like ion exclusion, which leaded to the elution curve shift. Therefore, integrated system for detecting MWD and characterization of DOM should be needed.
