Decoding hydrogeochemical mixing of groundwater within the Swedish site investigation programme

At present, the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) is evaluating two sites, at Forsmark and Laxemar, with the objective of proposing a geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. The site investigation comprises a complete hydrogeochemical programme of the sites using new boreholes for characterising the groundwaters. The new data from each site are analysed and a conceptual model is built in order to develop a Site Descriptive Model (SDM) of the site. A SDM is a synthesis of the geology, rock mechanics, thermal properties, hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry of the site, and a surface system description. Our contribution is, by using the M3 code, to help characterise the origin and mixing proportions of the groundwaters. This information is used for the SDM and to transfer the knowledge from hydrochemistry to hydrogeology. Examples from the Laxemar site are given.
