Respiratory Face Mask Design for Mass Customization
This paper put forwards two kinds of mass customization. One is for personal design absolutely and another is for mass production. Respiratory face mask could be designed according to different requirement. Method of reverse engineering is used to get three dimensional (3D) facial model. Laser scanner and computer aided design and computer aided manufacture ( CAD/CAM ) technology which is commonly used in reverse engineering to reconstruct 3D facial model, so as to provide personal 3D model for respiratory face mask design. The process of reverse engineering is described in detail. Commercial laser scanner is used to acquire thousands of 3D discrete points of a facial plaster model. The cloud of point file is used to build a 3D facial model. Respiratory face mask is designed according to characteristic points of 3D facial model. We compared respiratory face mask with the cloud of point of 3D facial models, the accuracy is 0. 1mm. The maximum errors are located in the area where curvatures are maximum. The result is quite satisfactory for clinical requirement. Minimizing the quantity of facial characteristic points and not decrease accuracy is a focus for future work. This method is simple and wieldy, and can be used in other centers for a variety of application, such as artificial limb design, man-machine system design, virtual operation etc..
