Project Scheduling with Overlapping Activities Using Dependency Structure Matrix
In the conventional scheduling techniques such as Critical Path Methods ( CPM) and Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), generally there is only one logical sequence between activities in a project, i. e. Finish-to-star ( FS) relationship. However, in reality, execution of activities is often required to be overlapped in order to shorten the project duration. This paper presents an approach for project scheduling with overlapping activities using Dependency Structure Matrix ( DSM ). We first introduce the overlapping index to represent the degree of overlapping between activities in a project. We then present a solution procedure to calculate the project duration using DSM. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to verify the proposed approach. The result shows that the proposed approach can obtain shorter project duration compared with the traditional PERT method.
