A Data Mining Approach for Innovative Product Development Guided by Customer Requirements

In a globalised and individual business environment, customer needs become an important factor for a company in order to out-perform its competitors. To address the issue of innovative product development guided by customer requirements, the development of conceptual product reflecting customer s preference characteristic was proposed based on data mining approach. A customer requirement knowledge management ( CRKM ) model with corresponding data mining approach was given out. Aiming at different customer need forms, several data mining methods such as text mining, frequency statistic, similarity measure, and N dimensional space degree were used to extract customer requirement knowledge from different CRK models. A modified FAH was put forward to compartmentalize the design specifications of conceptual product. Based on the weigh distribution gained from data mining, the quantitative result of customer preference for conceptual product can be calculated through AHP. The result can be used in the decision making for innovative product development in order to reduce project risk and secure commercial success.
