Evaluation of potential danger of slope failure using FEM-SS method
This paper presents the FEM-SS method, in which FEM is used to evaluate potential danger of slope failure in risk management. Firstly, definition of Safety Factor of Potential Slip-surface (SFPS) was discussed. In order to clarify the problems associated with traditional Limit Equilibrium Method (LEM), the numbers of indeterminate problem and the assumptions in each LEM were discussed. Then, after an outline of the FEM-SS method is introduced, the method was verified using ‘the standard slope, and slopes with different shape are analyzed using the LEMs and the FEM-SS method. It is concluded that the FEM-SS method can lead to same safety factor as those of Bishop method or the Modified Janbu method. Furthermore, it is suitable for use in risk management based on advantages that it can be used to evaluate the influences of slope deformation and complicated boundary conditions properly.
