Approaches to ULS design – The merits of Design Approach 1 in Eurocode 7

Development of Eurocode 7 (EN1997-1) has led to many debates about the way safety should be ensured in design calculations, particularly when considering ultimate limit states. As a result, EN1997-1 allows national choice between three “Design Approaches which are different ways of combining partial factors. In this paper, some of the basic principles of geotechnical design are reviewed, providing the rationale for the development of Design Approach 1 – DA1.
