Pig practice in intensive pig production in Korea
Early 1980s there were no pig practioners in Korea. Most of the veterinarians who had concems for pigs were employed by pharmaceutical companies, feed mill companies or large intensive pig farms. Then veterinarians usually recommended drugs to treat pig diseases. But in intensive pig production system, most of the diseases are multifactorial. Many problems in the farm did not response well to the drugs. It was required for the veterinarians to understand intensive pig production to control farm problems.High capital investment was needed in intensive pig production. And so most pig producers ask veterinarians for keeping high productivity for successful pig farming.Recently we, veterinarians, have challenged new issues such as pig welfare and pork safety.Early 1990 a preventive medicine scheme was proposed in UK. And the definition of disease was widen as a failure of normally accepted biological processes causing a reduction in performance. To do pig practice needs to understand the pig and the animal husbandry, which are generally lacking depth in modern veterinary curriculums.
