A Pointer Forwarding and Regional Registration Based Dynamic Location Management for LEO Satellite Networks

In this paper, we propose a pointer forwarding and regional registration based dynamic location management strategy for LEO satellite networks. It introduces a conception of regional location area(RLA), in which the mobile terminal(MT) selects a visitor location register(VLR) as its mobility agent(MA) and needs no update to the home location register(HLR), and sub-regional location area(SRLA). A pointer needs to be set up between the VLR and MA when the MT is roaming between the SRLAs, it is only necessary to set up a pointer between the current VLR and old VLR when the MT is roaming in the SRLA. The size of SRLA, as well as the number of SRLAs in an RLA, can be changed at any moment according to the mobility pattern of MT. Thus the optimization of location management can be reached by the dynamic adjustment of the two parameters.
