Analysis of the Effect of Intercarrier-Interference for Mobile MASK-OFDM Systems

M-ary amplitude shift keying (MASK) has been proposed as an alternative modulation scheme in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. It uses the same bandwidth and can offer the same bit-error rate (BER) performance as ordinary M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) OFDM in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) Channels while it owns the advantages of less system complexity and better frequency diversity. But, when OFDM is used for mobile application, it cannot be neglected that the intercarrier-interference (ICI) introduced by Doppler frequency shift. So, we should evaluate the BER performance of MASK-OFDM justly in mobile radio channels. In this paper, through theory analysis and computer simulation, we compared the ICI of MASK-OFDM with that of MQAM-OFDM, and proved that the former suffers more severe ICI than the latter in the same frequency offset error.
