Joint Congestion and Medium Access Control in Cooperative Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

In this paper, we address the congestion andmedium access control (MAC) problem for cooperative vehicularad-hoc networks (VANETs) in the framework of utility functionmaximization. Compared to its counterpart in a wired networkwhere link capacities are assumed to be fixed, congestion controlin a multi-hop cooperative VANETs is much more complex andrequires joint optimization at both the transport layer and theMAC layer. This is due to the fact that the attainable functionvalue on each path in the network is “elastic which resultsin typically non-convex (non-concave) or non-separable functionof the transmission attempt rates. A new cross-layer algorithmis proposed to solve the system problem with constraints thatarise from the cooperation among the users and contention forthe wireless channel access. The algorithm works at the MAClayer to adjust link persistence probability and at the transportlayer to adjust flow rates joitly, and it is designed in distributedmanner that is amenable to on-line implementation for VANETs.We prove rigorously that the proposed algorithm converges tothe globally optimal solution.
