Multi-Objective Layout Optimization in Dynamic Environments: A Heuristic Approach

This paper discusses the dynamic multiple stage facility layout problem with the unequal area departments. Layout evaluation criteria considered include not only the traditional material handling cost but also the re-layout cost and other costs that are not considered before. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve this NP-hard problem. The key point for this algorithm is how to consider the functional layout and re-layout cost during the changing periods. The heuristic algorithm can also be used to reduce the complexity of the solution searching procedure. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective.
