A Comparative Study of the Role Balance of Chinese Men and Women Entrepreneurs

To explore the differences between men and women entrepreneurs and to understand the relationships among role balance, stress, and leadership style, 106 entrepreneurs in Hubei, Guangdong, Zhejiang province were investigated in this research, and a comparative study of men and women entrepreneurs was carried out on their role balance degree (between job and family), the stress, and the leadership style balance degree (between task-orientation and people-orientation). At the same time, the correlations among the three variables were also studied. Our conclusions: first, compared to men entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs are more inclined to balance their career with family life. Second, given a certain level of corporate performance, we found a negative correlation between the women entrepreneurs role balance degree and perceived stress exists. For men, there is no significant relation between role balance and stress. Third, women entrepreneurs leadership styles are more inclined to balance a task-orientation with a people-orientation. Last, for both men and women entrepreneurs, role balance degree is significantly positively correlated to the leadership style balance. These findings are important because it proves the importance of role balance for women entrepreneurs. The higher the role balance degree of women entrepreneurs, the lower their pressure, and the more balanced their leadership style.
