The Moderating Effect of Emotional Labor upon the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Job Behaviors

The study explores the joint effects of emotional intelligence (EI) and emotional labor on job behaviors, including in-role behavior and extra-role behavior, OCB. Results of analyzing 361 Civil servants show that emotional intelligence counts for both in-role behavior and OCB variance; emotional labor enhances the EI-in-role behavior relationship but has no impact on the EI-OCB relationship. The study also found though EI in general is positively related to emotional labor, but among the four dimensions, only UOE and OEA have significant positive correlations with emotional labor. Corresponding implications of the results are offered.
