Psychological Contract Breach and Employees Responses: The Moderating Effects of Leader-Member Exchange

With a sample of 198 supervisor-subordinate dyads from the Peoples Republic of China, this study empirically examined the effects of psychological contract breach on employees attitudes and behaviors, tested the the moderating effect of leader-member exchange on the relationship between psychologicalcontract breach and employees responses. The results indicated that the employee perceived psychological contract breach was negtively correlated with employee outcomes of job performance,organizational citizenship behavior and organizational commitment, and leader-member exchange moderated the relationship between psychological contract breach and employees responses such that the higher the level of quality of leader-member exchange,the stronger was the negative relationships between perceived psychological contract breach and employees job performance,organizational citizenship behavior and organizational commitment, the sronger the positive relationship between perceived psychological contract breach and intent to quit.
