Effects of Paternalistic Leadership on Subordinates Organizational Justice: Evidence from Mainland China
Paternalistic leadership (PL) is prevalent leadership style in Chinese business organizations. With an approach similar to patriarchy, PL entails an evident and powerful authority that shows consideration for subordinates with moral leadership. We sampled 428 subordinates from 14 organizations in China-mainland to investigate the relationship among PL and organizational justice. Our hypotheses were as follows: (1) benevolent and moral leadership have significant positive effects and authoritarian leadership has a significant negative effect on subordinate perception of organizational justice; (2) there exists an interaction between the three elements of PL (benevolence, morality, and authoritarianism) on subordinate perception of fairness. Statistical analyses generally supported these hypotheses. At last implications for leadership theory and practice are discussed.
