Beyond Path Dependence: Organizational Learning in the Innovation of Complex Technology

摘要：

Path dependence has been identified by some researchers as the source of technology innovation. However, considering the increasing application of complex technologies in society, this paper proposes path dependence must be overcome in case of complex technology innovation. Otherwise organization would be locked in competence trap. To beyond path dependence,organizational learning by combining the backward-looking and forward-looking logic is proposed in this paper as an effective method to avoid the myopia of learning which is induced by following along firms technological trajectory. A case of the development of Maglev in China is presented to illustrate the necessity to beyond path dependence in the innovation of complex technology and the corresponding organizational learning strategy.
