Residential natural gas demand analysis in Shanghai, China
With the Transportation of western gas to Eastern China project proceeding, natural gas will be first applied widely in China. Residential natural gas demand is an important sector contributing to this use. Therefore, the study regarding the rule of residential natural gas is significant to develop natural gas industry in China in efficient, economical, sustaining direction. In this paper, the analysis has been carried out by using micro data for Shanghai. This is the first effort to estimate the demand function for residential natural gas by using micro data in China. The paper estimates the annual capita natural gas consumption in Shanghai with econometric estimation of a single equation that takes care of the problem of heteroskedasticity. Through repeated computation and test, we gain efficient parameters. It is concluded that household size, the number of the gas appliance, households attitude for natural gas use, income are the major drivers for residential natural gas in Shanghai at present. Meanwhile, we determine the quantitative relation between annual capita gas demand and the major drivers, which will provide reference for the government formulating proper energy policy.
