Removal of bioaerosols in HVAC system using the electret filters

This study utilized electret filters in the small-scale building heating, ventilating air conditioning (HVAC) system to remove the bioaerosols. Various factors, including the total air change per hour (total ACH), the fresh air change per hour (fresh ACH), and the relative humidity (RH) were considered to evaluate their effects on the bioaerosols decay behavior in the HVAC system with using electret filter. Results showed that decay constants of the E-Coli bioaerosol in the small-scale HVAC system without and with using electret filter were 0.183 (1/hr) and 0.708 (1/hr) (total ACH of 1.0 (1/hr) and fresh ACH of 0.18 (1/hr) ). That indicated that when the electret was applied in the HVAC system, the bioaerosol decay constant increased obviously. The results also presented that the bioaerosol decay constant (with electret filter) increased with total ACH and fresh ACH. The results implied that the decay constant of bioaerosols decreased with RH increasing.
