Fuzzy control of fresh air in residential air conditioning system

Nowadays, fresh air in most residential air conditioning systems in China is supplied with constant air volume. However, over ventilation will lead to a significant waste of energy and lack ventilation cause bad indoor air quality (IAQ). This study applies fuzzy logic to a fresh air control system for its advantages over conventional control techniques in aspects of robustness and ease in implementing control rules. Regarding indoor CO2 level as controlled object and its error and the change rate of its error as the input variables, the fuzzy controller outputs the corresponding fresh air volume to keep indoor CO2 level under set point. We setting up the simulation model of the control system for a typical residential room with MATLAB simulink toolkit, the results show that the fuzzy controller does well in maintaining indoor CO2 level. The methods of this study can also be used to control other indoor pollutants.
